2020/7/31 : METI Journal, a public relations magazine of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, reported that Polar Star Space succeeded in identifying anomalous trees affected by diseases in demonstration experiments at oil palm plantations in Malaysia and banana plantations in the Philippines

From METI Journal “Startup working to solve problems using satellite, drone data”

“In 2018, Polar Star Space conducted a joint project with several partners, including Hokkaido University, in which it successfully developed a technology to detect disease-affected trees. The project used machine learning to analyze detailed spectrum data from a vast oil palm plantation in Malaysia, measuring about one-fifth the area of Tokyo. A similar project was undertaken at a banana plantation in the Philippines. At the banana plantation, farmers used to have to walk around the banana plants looking for signs of new Panama disease. If affected plants can be quickly identified using measured data, it would go a long way in preventing the spread of the disease.”

“it can identify with a high level of precision subtle changes that the human eye simply can’t. It achieves this by seamlessly working with an ultrasmall satellite or drone, depending on the scope needed to be captured and the desired degree of precision.”

“‘When you think of space development, you tend to think of blasting rockets and satellites into space. I think the meaning of doing this is to create services that can make people around the world aware that the data obtained has made their lives richer and more convenient.'”
